The exhibition will feature paintings by a variety of artists working in what could be loosely defined as a representational mode. All of the work uses landscape as its starting point but none view the world in a naturalistic way, rather they seem to believe in a natural world that exists only as it is mediated by man.
The works demonstrate the plurality of painting modes that are at use today. From Heather Brown's expressionistic handling of paint, to Paul Paiment's almost illustrational style, to Lucas Reiner's subtly hued paintings of fireworks, to Dion Johnson's numerous graphic techniques, the painters in this exhibition explore every possible way of creating an image.
The artist's have dispensed with portraying a larger inclusive world, focusing instead on the close up, the fragment, and the isolated instance. Great variations in scale are evident in the expansive openness of Stas Orlovski's paintings to the oppressive miniaturization of Pam Posey taking one from being a viewer to being a voyeur. In cases such as Andre Yi's delicate painting of a construction zone or Jessica Snow's visions of internal systems, nature has been relegated to a backdrop and an afterthought.
