Diana Cooper: My Eye Travels
My Eye Travels
In Diana Cooper’s first west coast exhibition she will debut work made during her recent residency at the American Academy in Rome. Cooper, whose sprawling installation pieces and explosive drawings have been widely exhibited in Europe and New York, will debut a large-scale work entitled Swarm. Like much of her work it begins with simple elements that are then repeated and extended until the work becomes a labor-intensive sprawl. Incorporating drawing and sculpture Cooper’s works become site specific as they adapt to the confines of each exhibition venue.
Cooper’s work is often discussed in terms of systems, both digital and biological, that through repetition and excess become something that unravels and stops making sense. Treading a line between order and chaos her works envelope the viewer, but due to their innate fragility they never become overbearing. The work depicts elaborate networks that suggest mysterious functions and unnamable machines.
Diana Cooper has exhibited at the Rolf Staub Gallery, Zurich, The Drawing Room, London, The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, the Sculpture Center, New York, Anne de Villepoix, Paris, the Weatherspoon Museum, Greensboro, and Postmasters Gallery, New York, amongst others.
