Tony de los Reyes: The Last Achipelago
The Last Archipelago
In his Los Angeles solo debut, Tony de los Reyes will exhibit a cycle of paintings that explores a fantastic journey involving ships, oceanic passages, and fertile islands. The paintings are made with an industrial oil alkyd whose surface recalls eighteenth century Delft ceramics in both it’s palette of blues and whites and it’s glossy enamel sheen.
Using images reconfigured from historical sources, De Los Reyes unique use of a wet on wet technique allows him to coax abstract streams and pools of paint into luxurious images of ships moving towards exotic tropical locales. With this show De Los Reyes has increased the size of his paintings bringing them closer to a cinematic effect and giving his previously more intimate subject matter a sense of the epic.
