This summer group exhibition will feature paintings, sculptures, an installation, and drawings that reflect the ongoing integration of various modes of image making, that are brought together in unlikely combinations to form fractured wholes.

Iva Gueorguieva’s explosive large-scale painting moves freely between cartoony drawing and gestural abstraction, as do the smaller automatist paintings of Angela Willcocks. Merion Estes paintings and the installations of Julie Hughes draw on aspects of illustration and abstraction that are brought together in an over-the-top sensibility. The paintings of Kristi Kent and Devon Tsuno fuse elements of architecture together with a painterly facility, while Allison Schulnick’s large narrative painting marries the heavily painted surface of a Frank Auerbach painting with the subject matter of a large dioramic battle scene.

Sculptor Coleen Sterritt’s sculpture uses the found object of an abandoned table upon which she builds a criss-crossing outcropping of wood. The work seems to draw in space with wood strips as lines that both physical and illustrational. Gwen Pool’s sculpture uses found materials to create fragile objects that move upwards whilst all the while appearing ready to collapse. The drawings of Erin Cosgrove reflect a cartoonish sensibility filtered through a love of the great tapestries of Europe’s ancient churches.

Featuring the above discussed individual works that combine varying outlooks, the exhibition will further complicate the cross referencing by setting up juxtapositions and cross references that create both disorder and a sense of interactivity within the gallery.
