Gravity’s Playthings

Neha Choksi’s debut solo exhibition in the United States will feature work in various mediums, including sculpture, photograms, and video, in an exhibition that provides extended meditations on a single theme. As in her previous bodies of work the central concern of the new work is the processes by which desires for freedom meet with the cultural impulses to domesticate.

In Gravity’s Playthings the plastic skins of inflatable animals leave their fleeting traces on the various mediums she employs. In this lyrical play of ruins Choksi fills and empties, tears and mends the hides in fitful dramas pitting the delicate transience of form against the stolid gravity of stasis. Photograms of tattered empty skins laid out as display hides and a sculpture utilizing casts of tigers inside a doghouse evoke by turns the savage and the domestic in the lives of playthings. Choksi toys with and quietly observes these denuded objects of empathy in the throes of that ubiquitous natural force from which few find temporary escape and against which each of us strives.
