Steve Schmidt: New Work

New Work

Steve Schmidt’s new work uses the modernist grid as the base of exploration for a wide-ranging group of topics and sensations that go beyond the formalism that has often defined reductive geometric art. Composed of hundreds of small pieces of slightly imperfect colored rectangles made of polypropalene, a material more commonly used in a variety of consumer products, each piece becomes a mark in a strangely organic grid. As the artist works he finds himself “at play with thoughtful restraint” and somewhere between boredom and awareness as he builds his expansive grids. The works will be displayed in a gallery that is lit primarily by natural light, which allows the subtleties of the paintings industrial colors to expand into the surrounding environment and the viewer’s awareness.
