Following his critically successful show at the gallery a year ago, McCleary will present new small-scale paintings whose subject matter are flowers and heads. McCleary works directly from life, which allows him a depth of understanding of his subject which he conveys to the paintings viewers. As Holly Myers noted in a review of his last show at the gallery:

McCleary’s distinction, one senses, is not only that he really looks at his
subjects – a significant accomplishment in itself – but that he genuinely loves
that process of looking. The result is a portraiture that moves beyond the
features to capture the deeper qualities that light a countenance from within.

McCleary’s attention to detail, his nuanced and subtle handling of paint, and his clear eyed seeing all contribute to the power these diminutive works hold. These are images that reward and demand sustained looking.
