When Worlds Collide

November 17, 2007 - December 15, 2007

Carl Baratta, Iva Gueorguieva, Nathan Redwood, Julie Rofman and Megan Williams

Carl Berg Gallery is pleased to present “When Worlds Collide” a group show of gallery and invited artists whose work resides somewhere between abstraction and representation presenting worlds that range from the apocalyptic to the fanciful.

Carl Baratta will present paintings whose underlying structure does not follow the convention of typical narrative works. Baratta states, “My narrative systems never settle. If things do not become fixed, they cannot be dismissed or forgotten. Every element is highly charged, active, and alive including dramatic spatial shifts, the violent color pallet, the mismatched characters and the exotic landscape.” This will be his first show in Los Angeles.

Coming off her stellar solo exhibition at the Carl Berg Gallery Iva Gueorguieva will feature new work that was drawn from collage series from her solo show. Gueorguieva will present a large-scale hybrid collage painting that combines together abstraction, figuration and volatile movement. Elements of painting and sculpture are brought together continuing her explosive narratives. Currently Gueorguieva is also featured in a project show at the Pomona Museum in Claremont.

Nathan Redwood will present new work in his third exhibition at the Carl Berg Gallery. With the early breakout shows “Debut” (group, 2006) and “Construction Under the Sun”(solo, 2007) Redwood burst onto the scene with his unique painting style. For this exhibition Redwood continues his complex narratives creating works that freeze the moment in a place somewhere between the past, the present and the future. Redwood is currently exhibiting at Electric Works in his first solo exhibition in San Francisco.

Julie Rofman was also a participant in “Debut” last summer presenting paintings that consisted of self-envisioned spaces where non-structural elements converge and collect. This body of paintings investigated partially abstract environments of manufactured ruins, taking on new life in an imagined world. Rofman continues her exploration of the post-apocalyptic environment with an impressive and more realistic painting style that confronts the viewer more forcefully and more directly. Rofman is a recent recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant.

Megan Williams will present new work in her third exhibition at the Carl Berg Gallery. Williams will feature a multi-panel painting that draws from her quintessential subject of volatile narratives, creating a storybook fantasy for adults. Williams continues her indelible cartoon based imagery that holds no prisoners creating an explosive quality that charges at the viewer.

“When World Collide” draws together artists whose work combines opposing elements of abstraction and figuration, through movement and narrative, and thorough stillness and time, thus creating this unrelenting volatility in each artists work.
